Non-profits are complex businesses, built on a foundation of ethical action grounded in the public trust. Starting, growing, and leading non-profits creates challenges that are in some cases more complex than those facing the private sector. Social entrepreneurs are individuals leading non-for-profit organizations who develop innovative solutions to long standing issues, are strategic, and manage their internal operations effectively. Non-profits are confronted not only with fundamental business decisions, but also with ethical issues inherent in their role in our society: addressing the needs of multiple constituencies, balancing values against the requirements of effective management, and creating the greatest common good with limited resources. This course gives students a broad overview of the ethical and overall business leadership challenges of the non-profit sector, while providing non-profit organizations with the specific consulting skills they need as they strive to better meet the needs of the community.

This course covers the role of community nonprofit organizations in our society, especially their function in community building and engaging citizen participation. This class offers a broad intellectual foundation and applied approach to the guiding theories and philosophy of nonprofit practice and community development. By examining different models of community-based nonprofits, students will get experience exploring relevant issues of public service, funding, evaluation, theories of change, public policy, social capital, and civic engagement.

This course provides undergraduate students with an introduction to the history and development of the social work profession, as well as the development and role of the social work profession in the social welfare institutional system. In examining the history and development of the social work profession, the course will examine the social work principles and values associated with working with individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities. In examining the development and role of the social work profession in the social welfare institutional system, the course will examine historical and contemporary social, political, economic, and cultural issues (i.e., poverty, racism, discrimination, child welfare, domestic violence, chronic illness, mental illness, substance abuse, crime, unemployment, and homelessness) in society. The course will also examine how public- and private-based human and social service institutions have/are attempting to alleviate or eliminate these social issues in society.

This social work practice course introduces students to the values, knowledge, and skills essential for generalist social work practice. This course focuses on the integration of theory, methods, and skills as they apply to practice with individuals and families. This course provides students with an in-depth examination of the problem-solving process within individual, familial, and ecosystem developmental frameworks. This course emphasizes the engagement of clients in a professional working relationship with a focus on intra- and inter-personal communication skills and case-management assessment and treatment planning (i.e., identifying issues, problems, needs, resources, assets, and planning for service delivery). This course also gives special attention to understanding, affirming, and respecting people of diverse backgrounds.
SW3710 Case Management for Social Workers

This course introduces students to the concept of case management and how it is used to provide human services. Students will explore the many factors affecting case management today including federal legislation, emerging client groups, technology, shifting demographics, paperwork, evidence-based service delivery models, and the resulting ethical and legal dilemmas. This course is designed to provide the student with knowledge regarding the importance of case management as a form of practice for social workers. Case managers provide services in micro, mezzo, and macro systems. There will be an emphasis on the role of professional values and ethics and the impact of diversity, oppression, and discrimination on case management.

Additional Information

The Nonprofit Academy of Excellence at the University of Utah is a new, certificate-based program created to inspire excellence in nonprofit management and governance. This unique program is customized for managers, staff, and trustees of Utah’s nonprofit community. It will teach enhanced organizational capacity and effectiveness to professionals and volunteers seeking training and development in nonprofit management. Developed in collaboration with the Utah Nonprofits Association and the Utah Society of Fund Raisers, the Academy is guided by an Advisory Committee of distinguished professionals from the nonprofit sector, representing corporate giving to board members to nonprofit management roles.
